The triatominae species of French Guiana (Heteroptera: Reduviidae)

An annotated list of the triatomine species present in French Guiana is given. It is based on field collections carried out between 1993-2008, museum collections and a literature review. Fourteen species, representing four tribes and six genera, are now known in this country and are illustrated (habitus). Three species are recorded from French Guiana for the first time: Cavernicola pilosa, Microtriatoma trinidadensis and Rhodnius paraensis. The two most common and widely distributed species are Panstrongylus geniculatus and Rhodnius pictipes. The presence of two species (Panstrongylus megistus and Triatoma maculata) could be fortuitous and requires confirmation. Also, the presence of Rhodnius prolixus is doubtful; while it was previously recorded in French Guiana, it was probably mistaken for R. robustus. The integumentary glands, as visible under the stereoscopic microscope, are studied in vivo in Canthon indigaceus chevrolati and C. cyanellus cyanellus. Glandular activity was deduced from the appearance of the secretory cells, their variations in size and from the content of the reservoir whenever it existed. The pygidial and the mandibular glands are functional and active from the start of imaginal life, but not the sternal and the preputial tubular glands which are active only from the start of reproduction about a month later. Before reproduction, the sternal glands show a progressive development which is parallel to, and synchronous with, sexual maturation and which does not occur, or occurs incompletely, in the absence of the latter. Once started, the activity of the sternal and the pygidial glands seems to progress in a continuous manner without any significant change. Les hétéroptères (Insecta, Hemiptera) décrits par Paul Dispons. Inventaire commenté des spécimens types conservés au Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris

Une liste commentée des 174 taxons d’hétéroptères, décrits ou proposés par Paul Dispons entre 1950 et 1971, est présentée après étude de la collection de l’auteur conservée au Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris. Au total, 257 spécimens types ont été identifiés. Ceux-ci appartiennent à 116 taxons de rang spécifique, des Reduviidae pour la plupart, auxquels il faut ajouter sept Coreidae, un Lygaeidae, un Miridae, deux Corixidae et un Belostomatidae. Des lectotypes sont désignés pour 27 espèces, sous-espèces ou variétés. L’étude de ce matériel type confirme les synonymies déjà établies et conduit à en proposer neuf nouvelles : Rhinocoris hierapolitanus Dispons, 1964 n. syn. et R. ocreatus Dispons, 1964 n. syn. de R. iracundus (Poda, 1761) ; R. iracundus nigripes f. safavii Dispons &amp; Villiers, 1967 n. syn. de R. iracundus nigripes Kolenati, 1857 ; Holotrichius apterus kafirnigani Dispons, 1964 n. syn., H. apterus kizilkumi Dispons, 1964 n. syn. et H. ilius Dispons, 1964 n. syn. de H. bergrothi Jakovlev, 1891 ; H. araxeus Dispons, 1964 n. syn. et H. eroanumensis Dispons, 1964, n. syn. de H. apterus Jakovlev, 1879 ; Oncocephalus babylo Dispons, 1970 n. syn. de O. brachymerus Reuter, 1882. Dispons est donnée.An annotated list of the 174 taxa of Heteroptera described or proposed by Paul Dispons between 1950 and 1971 is given after a study of his collection preserved in the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris. A total of 257 type specimens are recognized belonging to 116 taxa at specific level. Most of them are Reduviidae, and others are Coreidae (seven), Lygaeidae (one), Miridae (one), Corixidae (two) and Belostomatidae (one). Lectotypes are designated for 25 of them. The study of this material confirms the previously established synonymies and allows us to propose nine new ones: Rhinocoris hierapolitanus Dispons, 1964 n. syn. and R. ocreatus Dispons, 1964 n. syn. of R. iracundus (Poda, 1761) ; R. iracundus nigripes f. safavii Dispons &amp; Villiers, 1967 n. syn. of R. iracundus nigripes Kolenati, 1857 ; Holotrichius apterus kafirnigani Dispons, 1964 n. syn., H. apterus kizilkumi Dispons, 1964 n. syn. and H. ilius Dispons, 1964 n. syn. of H. bergrothi Jakovlev, 1891 ; H. araxeus Dispons, 1964 n. syn. and H. eroanumensis Dispons, 1964 n. syn. of Holotrichius apterus Jakovlev, 1879 ; Oncocephalus babylo Dispons, 1970 n. syn. of O. brachymerus Reuter, 1882.
